Keep Christianity Weird: Embracing the Discipline of Being Different by Michael Frost
Weird and Christianity go hand in hand when it comes to
public opinion. Following Jesus and believing what He says is true looks weird
to many, but that is not what this book is about. Believers need to embrace the
weirdness, not just in how we are perceived but in how we act. Through looking
at the “weird cities” of America and a number of revivals to the faith, Michael
Frost suggests that there is a theme. We are made to be set apart to live
counter to the culture of the world around us, including the boxes of religion,
but most of the time we go with the flow of what the church tells us instead of
the way Jesus lived his life. Keep Christianity Weird is a
commission, a challenge to every Jesus lover to walk in and embody the
weirdness of Jesus’s actions, so we can show the world who Jesus is; not what
we have made Him out to be.
I am extremely challenged by this book. I think it is true
that Christians have conformed to the ways of religion instead of unifying
around the call to take on the life of Christ. To pick up our cross and follow
Him. To be weird. I think this, because I see it in myself. I have a greater
desire to be liked and accepted, than to stand against the grain and care for
the world, love the unlovable, care for our cities, and be in our world. We may
no longer be of this world, but we are in it and we should care about it and
the people around us while we are here. Jesus did. Keep Christianity Weird,
will rock your world while giving you something to think about and hopefully a
push to live like Jesus instead of religion. It did for me. This book is small
and short a perfect read if you are looking for something thought provoking,
but you will get through it in a short amount of time; like over a school break
or vacation.
Keep Christianity Weird would make a great small
group or book club study, great discussions are to be had and hopefully some
amazing actions taken.
